Conservationists have received encouraging news for Cambodia’s biodiversity after a wildlife conservation team discovered three Sarus crane nests in Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary, Mondulkiri province, by July 2026. The discovery is a positive sign of breeding activity. With the breeding season continuing until October, conservation staff hope to find more nests in the coming months.
Lomphat Wildlife Sanctuary is considered an important natural habitat for Sarus cranes, providing food, water and a safe environment for breeding. The Sarus crane is the tallest bird capable of flight and is threatened with extinction worldwide.
From June to July, at the beginning of the rainy season, biodiversity researchers from NatureLife Cambodia worked closely with park rangers and local communities on repeated surveys and studies. Despite difficulties such as trekking through rain, crossing streams, carrying motorbikes and travelling along muddy roads, the team remained committed to protecting and monitoring the breeding of these rare cranes.
Finding the three nests indicates positive results from the joint efforts of authorities, partner organisations and local communities to conserve wildlife and protect Cambodia’s ecosystems. It also brings renewed hope for the survival and growth of the Sarus crane population, a valuable natural heritage for future generations.
