Deputy Police Commissioner Arrested! Cambodia Raids Telecom Scam Den, 246 People Investigated

A senior police officer in Cambodia's Banteay Meanchey province has been arrested on suspicion of involvement in online scam operations. On September 21, local joint law enforcement agencies launched an operation and arrested Major General Usopho, Deputy Police Commissioner of Banteay Meanchey province. Two buildings under his name were alleged to have been used by scam groups to carry out cybercrime activities.

During the raid, the two buildings, both located in Poipet City, were found to consist of a 5-story building with 172 rooms and 1 hall, and a 2-story building with a total of 59 rooms and 4 halls.
During the operation, police discovered a total of 246 people, including 223 foreign nationals: 174 Thais, 10 Bangladeshis, 8 Indonesians, 3 Filipinos, 2 Chinese, 2 Indians, and 1 Malaysian, as well as 23 Cambodians.

The two buildings have been temporarily shut down, and police have also seized a batch of related items. Those involved have been transferred to the relevant authorities for investigation, and the case is still under further investigation.
On September 16, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet stressed that telecom scams seriously affect the country's image, tourism industry, and public security. The government will continue to take strong measures to crack down on related crimes, and has made it clear that officials who condone or harbor telecom scams, or who are derelict in their duties, will be dealt with seriously in accordance with the law.
