Floods and waters flowing down from Thailand inundate Poipet, over 800 families evacuated to safety

The flood situation in Banteay Meanchey province is in a state of emergency. As of the afternoon of September 26, 2026, rainwater combined with flooding flowing down from the upper part of Thailand has surged rapidly, severely inundating Poipet city more than any other area, forcing 850 families to evacuate to safe locations. Rainfall and flooding from streams and the Stung river have risen again after briefly receding this morning, causing severe damage to homes, schools, and road infrastructure in urban areas, to the point that small vehicles and motorbikes can no longer travel.

In response to this disaster, Mr. Oum Ratrey, Governor of Banteay Meanchey province, has issued an urgent directive to the authorities of all 7 communes in Serei Saophoan city, as well as throughout the province, to prepare all forces and all means to intervene in rescue operations and evacuate people from hazardous areas. At the same time, the provincial administration has deployed on-duty medical teams to examine, treat, and provide medicine to victims at safe locations, and has deployed security forces and citizen defenders to strictly ensure security and order for those currently staying in temporary shelters. In addition to Poipet city and Serei Saophoan city, the flooding is also threatening several other districts within the province. Specifically, on September 25, 2026, the Department of Public Works and Transport of Banteay Meanchey province announced the temporary suspension of traffic for all large vehicles on National Roads No. 5, No. 59, No. 56D, and Provincial Road No. 159H after floodwaters overflowed and severed several sections of road, in order to ensure the safety of travelers and prevent further damage to infrastructure.— By: Srey Pi
