“Khmer Can Do” Sign and Public Space
Preah Sihanouk province
The “ខ្មែរធ្វើបាន” sign, commonly rendered as “Khmer Can Do”, stands on a hillside along Chumteav Mao Boulevard, facing the Preah Thong Neang Neak roundabout. The hillside letters and the public space in front form a recognisable roadside landmark.
The supplied description records a 60-metre-long installation with letters 8.25 metres tall and 0.40 metres thick, positioned 23 metres above ground. From a distance, the whole composition relates to the hillside; closer views reveal the shapes of the Khmer letters.
The phrase was used in the context of constructing 37 roads in Sihanoukville to express Khmer capability. The associated explanation extends to historical cultural achievements such as Angkor Wat, rather than limiting the phrase to one government or individual.
The sign can be understood alongside the cultural story of the nearby Preah Thong Neang Neak monument. Follow on-site access arrangements and choose a safe viewing position; do not climb the slope or lettering, or linger in the boulevard’s carriageway.
