Preah Skanda on a Peacock

Sihanoukville

The Preah Skanda statue (ព្រះស្កន្ទទ្រង់ក្ងោក) stands at the junction of 2 Thnou Street 600 and the new Techo road in Sihanoukville. Its elevated pedestal and the deity’s peacock mount are key features for recognising the monument.

The supplied description associates the design with Khmer Koh Ker-style art. This is a modern urban sculpture inspired by a traditional style, not a claim that the monument was taken from the Koh Ker archaeological site.

The description gives the metal figure a height of 6.18 metres, with a pedestal of the same height, for a combined 12.36 metres. The deity faces northeast.

In the mythological account, Skanda defeats the evil Taraka and journeys towards Mount Kailash, the abode of Shiva. The scene expresses the end of war, peace, freedom and family reunion. Observe the pose and peacock details from a safe place, without standing in the junction or carriageway for photographs.
