A fire broke out aboard a ferry carrying 420 passengers and 40 crew members as it approached Merak Port in northwestern Indonesia yesterday, Tuesday afternoon, forcing more than 400 passengers to jump into the sea to save themselves.
The KMP Batumandi was sailing from Bakauheni Port to Merak Port when fire broke out in the engine room. The cause of the fire remained under investigation.
In response, the Indonesian government urged all ferry operators to ensure their vessels meet technical safety requirements and strengthen emergency preparedness.
