Read original

Summary

Residents near Prey Chan village in Banteay Meanchey reported frightening loudspeaker sounds from the Thai side on the nights of October 10 and 11. Cambodia condemned the disturbance and called on Thai authorities to stop it.

Unusual disturbances have again been reported at the Cambodia–Thailand border. For two consecutive nights, loud, frightening sound effects from the Thai side disrupted residents near Prey Chan village in Ou Chrov district, Banteay Meanchey province, drawing public attention.

According to sources at the scene, starting on the night of October 10, Thai personnel used loudspeakers near the border to play screams, wails and other frightening sounds continuously, alarming residents. On October 11 at about 8 p.m., the disturbance happened again and gradually stopped only after members of the ASEAN Interim Observer Team reached the scene.

Some media, citing Thai sources, said Thai democracy activists might have been involved, while suggesting that the conduct may have had the Thai military’s tacit approval.

Cambodia’s government strongly condemned the conduct, saying it disrupted border residents’ lives, violated human rights and undermined the peaceful atmosphere along the border. It called on Thai authorities to take immediate steps to prevent a recurrence and maintain stability and safety on both sides.
