Thai police recently cracked a cross-border online fraud case, arresting a Chinese man suspected of deceiving a 19-year-old Thai into handing over substantial valuables. Police said the scheme clearly involved intimidation and impersonation of law-enforcement officials.
According to investigators, the 31-year-old Chinese man, identified only by the surname Qin, allegedly worked with two accomplices to impersonate Thai law-enforcement agencies online, threaten the victim and demand cooperation with an investigation. Under sustained psychological pressure, the victim took valuables worth about 6.8 million baht, approximately US$209,000, from a safe at home on November 19 and delivered them to the designated location. The next day, the victim’s family noticed something was wrong and promptly contacted police.
Thai police subsequently traced and arrested Qin in Bangkok. Authorities said they were still pursuing two other Chinese suspects, identified by the surnames Huang and Zhang, and that the investigation was continuing.
