On December 31, the Ministry of Post and Telecommunications issued an announcement confirming Cambodia’s nationwide launch of fifth-generation mobile communications services (5G) from January 2026, marking a new stage in the country’s communications infrastructure and digital development.
The announcement said the Cambodian government formally decided on December 5, 2025 to approve the full launch of commercial 5G mobile services from January 2026. To ensure a smooth commercial launch, the ministry had worked closely with the country’s three major mobile operators—Cellcard, Metfone and Smart—to build and deploy 5G networks.
Under the deployment arrangements, the operators accelerated construction of communications base stations and antennas and completed installation of 5G equipment in priority areas according to the coverage maps attached to the announcement, providing the technical preparations needed for the launch.
The ministry said users of the three operators could access 5G services in the initial coverage areas from 12:01 a.m. on January 1, 2026. The first phase included priority areas in Phnom Penh, Preah Sihanouk, Siem Reap, Kandal, Svay Rieng, Kampong Speu, Takeo, Kampong Cham, Kampong Thom, Prey Veng, Kratie, Kampong Chhnang, Pursat, Stung Treng and Kampot.
The announcement also stressed that 5G coverage would continue to expand in phases as planned, gradually reaching other parts of the country to provide wider, stable and high-speed mobile services, support the digital economy, accelerate smart-city development and information technology adoption, and further improve the country’s overall competitiveness.
