At least nine people died and 36 were injured in road crashes during the single day of the 2026 New Year holiday yesterday. The figures were higher than on New Year’s Day 2025, when six people died and four were injured.
A National Police report issued yesterday recorded 16 road crashes nationwide, with nine deaths and 36 injuries. The main causes were speeding, failure to respect right of way, failure to keep right and overtaking.
The article suggested that the rise in New Year’s Day 2026 crashes appeared related to the government suspending intensified enforcement of traffic laws after armed clashes broke out in the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict.
On New Year’s Day 2025, there were only six road crashes nationwide, leaving six people dead and four injured.
