According to the Royal Thai Army, Thai troops patrolling the Thailand–Myanmar border in Mae Sai district, Chiang Rai province, early on January 2 exchanged fire with a group of suspected drug smugglers. The army seized a large quantity of drugs at the scene, initially counted as 2.2 million methamphetamine tablets.
The statement said the patrol spotted about 10 to 15 suspicious people in the border area and approached to question them. The group suddenly opened fire, triggering a brief exchange. The suspected smugglers then escaped through difficult terrain, while the Thai side suffered no casualties. Troops seized 11 modified sacks containing a total of 2.2 million tablets. Relevant authorities were continuing to investigate and handle the case.
