Summary

Mayor Sar Kakada said vendors must stop leaving furniture on public beaches and provided contact numbers for obstruction or demands for site fees.

After observing beach vendors placing tables, chairs, mats and hammocks on public beaches, detracting from their appearance and affecting public access and tourists, Sihanoukville Mayor Sar Kakada instructed vendors to stop leaving such furniture or other belongings on the beaches. The instruction aims to ensure that visitors can use these areas as public spaces.

According to a post on Sar Kakada’s Facebook page on the morning of January 4, vendors who leave tables, chairs, mats, hammocks or other items on public beaches in ways that affect public use and tourists will no longer be allowed to trade at those locations. The mayor stressed that visitors may ask for unattended tables, chairs, mats and hammocks to be removed so they can use the space publicly. Anyone facing obstruction or demands for site-rental fees was asked to contact 066 877 877 or 016 576 373.

The report noted that the city authorities’ successive actions concerning beach vendors appeared linked to a vendor taking advantage of visitors to Preah Sihanouk province by overcharging during the 2026 New Year holiday. The measures have drawn support and approval from many members of the public.
