Summary

Michael DeSombre said on January 9 that the US would provide about US$45 million: US$15 million for border stabilisation and displaced people, US$10 million for demining and US$20 million to help Cambodia and Thailand combat scams and drug trafficking.

The United States has decided to provide approximately US$45 million in assistance for people displaced by the Cambodia–Thailand border conflict, demining and combating online scams. US Assistant Secretary of State Michael DeSombre said on January 9 that the United States would allocate this assistance through discussions with Cambodian and Thai officials during his visits to the two countries.

To help achieve this goal, the United States is providing US$15 million for border stabilisation to help communities recover and support displaced people. A further US$10 million is for mine clearance and removal of unexploded ordnance, while US$20 million is for initiatives that will help both countries combat scam operations and drug trafficking.

DeSombre said the United States still wanted to see peace and stability between Cambodia and Thailand and would continue supporting both governments in implementing the Kuala Lumpur Peace Accords, paving the way for a return to peace, prosperity and stability for the people of both countries and the wider region.
