Summary

The Chinese embassy said on January 12 that Cambodian police rescued 10 Chinese citizens and arrested eight Chinese suspects in two cases in Phnom Penh and Tboung Khmum, while urging safety precautions.

According to a notification issued by the Chinese embassy in Cambodia last night, January 12, Cambodian police dealt with two cases of kidnapping and unlawful detention of Chinese citizens in Phnom Penh and Tboung Khmum province, rescuing 10 Chinese citizens and arresting eight Chinese suspects.

The embassy urged Chinese citizens to strengthen their safety awareness, exercise caution when making friends, avoid trusting others too readily and refrain from unnecessarily disclosing personal information.

The embassy noted that, in several recent cases involving the kidnapping and detention of Chinese citizens in Cambodia, most suspects were also Chinese nationals.

The embassy said it attached great importance to the personal safety and protection of the lawful rights of Chinese citizens in Cambodia, and would continue promoting cooperation with the relevant Cambodian authorities to firmly combat all illegal and criminal activities involving Chinese citizens.

The embassy stressed that offers of “high salaries” could lure people into dangerous situations, including unlawful detention, violence and other safety risks. It also reiterated that illegally crossing borders entails legal responsibility and may make it difficult for Cambodian authorities to identify people and rescue them promptly, increasing risks to their personal safety.

The embassy also advised Chinese citizens planning to travel to Cambodia to obtain clear information and said they could contact it for inquiries and assistance. Anyone encountering or learning of threats, unlawful detention or online scams should immediately report them to the Chinese and Cambodian authorities and contact the Chinese embassy in Cambodia for timely assistance and intervention.
