“Sport lives in peace.” Preah Sihanouk hosts the 25th January 7 Cup in 2026 to celebrate the 47th anniversary of January 7 Victory Day.

Preah Sihanouk Deputy Governor Samut Sothearith said at the badminton tournament’s opening ceremony that the Cambodia Badminton Federation and all stakeholders had organised the competition to celebrate and commemorate the 47th anniversary of January 7 Victory Day. He described the historic victory as overthrowing the brutal Pol Pot genocidal regime, saving Cambodia and its people, restoring their lives, and opening a new era of independence, freedom, democracy and social progress.

He said that after January 7, Cambodians united to overcome countless obstacles and hardships, protect the nation’s revival, and gradually restore and rebuild their homeland from the ashes. They achieved many major historical accomplishments with pride and brought development across all sectors to the present day. He recalled that, through the determination of Samdech Techo Hun Sen, the founder, chief architect and implementer of the Win-Win Policy, Cambodia ended its protracted war, achieved full peace and democracy rooted in society, and experienced rapid economic growth and improving living standards.

He said the Cambodian government, under the wise leadership of Prime Minister Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, was firmly protecting national sovereignty and territorial integrity through the strict implementation of a proactive policy of peaceful coexistence and effective use of international mechanisms, with the aim of continuing to safeguard peace for the country and its people.

Badminton is easy to play, adds enjoyable activities to communities, and offers many physical and other benefits: improving fitness, developing the ability to take part in other sports, strengthening mental health, building social relationships and supporting all-round health.

The deputy governor added that, to make work more effective and responsive to national social development, he called on authorities at all levels and both the public and private sectors to promote physical education and sport among the population, particularly young people, with growth in both participation and quality. The aims were to foster love of the nation and homeland, strengthen solidarity and friendship, and contribute significantly to national unity and peace in Cambodia.

Cambodia Badminton Federation Secretary-General Keo Ros said that the 25th January 7 badminton cup in 2026 was being held on January 17–18, with Preah Sihanouk Governor Mang Sineth helping to organise and support it. He said the gathering was not only about winning or losing, but also an opportunity to demonstrate badminton talent and skill and build friendships through sport.

The tournament has 10 events, with 12 clubs from the capital and provinces taking part and a total of 195 delegates and male and female athletes.
