Summary

At the January 24 conference closing, the deputy prime minister stressed the roles of police, gendarmerie and militia in tourist security in the coastal province.

Preah Sihanouk is a coastal tourism province in southwestern Cambodia, named the southwest's rising star by the government and planned for transformation into a model multipurpose special economic zone. Given its tourism potential, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Land Management, Urban Planning and Construction Say Samal instructed the province to provide visitors with the best possible safety and security.

He gave the instruction at the Saturday morning, January 24 closing of the provincial administration's conference reviewing 2025 results and setting 2026 directions. Say Samal said ensuring tourist safety and security rested on forces including the national police, gendarmerie and militia.

Thousands of tourists had visited the province in recent days, which the report presented as evidence that Cambodia remained safe, secure and stable for domestic and international visitors. On January 23 morning, the Dutch-flagged cruise ship WESTERDAM arrived at Sihanoukville Autonomous Port carrying 1927 tourists, including 1040 women. On January 21, the province received 45 Chinese tourists on a direct Cambodia Airways flight from Chengdu to Sihanoukville. These arrivals were seen as particularly beneficial to Cambodia's coastal tourism.
