Phnom Penh, February 2: Cambodian and Thai representatives exchanged views at the UN Security Council. Cambodia's representative, Keo Chhea, urged respect for international law and treaties, arguing that treaty violations undermine legal certainty and border principles. He called for peaceful settlement of disputes, including recourse to the International Court of Justice.
Thailand's representative, Cherdchai Chaivaivid, said the UN Charter and treaties should not be politicised or interpreted selectively, and that good-faith compliance determines their effectiveness. He reaffirmed a commitment to international law and international humanitarian law, opposing selective application or disregard for the responsibilities of all parties.
The two countries had previously experienced military clashes in July and December. Cambodia planned to take the dispute to the International Court of Justice, while Thailand advocated bilateral mechanisms. International Peace Institute President Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussein warned that leaders who ignore international law in pursuit of self-interest compound conflicts and crises, creating challenges for global peace.
