Cambodia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation lodged a formal strong protest against an unauthorised field visit led by the Thai Army's intelligence chief, accompanied by a group of foreign military attachés and law-enforcement officials, at two hotels in O Smach district, Oddar Meanchey province, Cambodia, on February 2, 2026.
The ministry said the visit took place without Cambodian government consent, seriously violating Cambodia's sovereignty and territorial integrity. The locations were about 397 metres from the O Smach international checkpoint near border pillar No. 15. The area had been occupied by Thai armed forces during their offensive into Cambodian territory between December 7 and 27, 2025.
The Cambodian government categorically rejected and opposed the Thai operations, including the illegitimate exercise of Thai sovereign authority through organising the visit. It regarded the visit as an attempt to legitimise the occupation of Cambodia's sovereign territory and a violation of the basic principles of the United Nations Charter and ASEAN Charter.
Alongside its firm protest, Cambodia reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to resolving all boundary disputes with Thailand and its other neighbours peacefully in accordance with international law, maintaining the principle that borders cannot be changed by force.
