At a party meeting in Phnom Penh on February 6, Cambodian People's Party President Hun Sen met visiting Communist Party of Vietnam General Secretary To Lam. They agreed that the talks reflected longstanding solidarity and trust between the parties and gave fresh impetus to the deepening of Cambodia–Vietnam traditional friendship. Hun Sen praised the relationship between the parties as a foundation for cooperation between the two governments and legislatures.
To Lam thanked Cambodia for its warm reception and said Vietnam had always highly valued and cherished Vietnam–Cambodia friendship and supported deepening practical cooperation at multiple levels, including between their parties, governments and legislatures. On border issues, both sides agreed that the current situation in border areas was generally safe and stable, and agreed to continue strengthening coordination, expand border cooperation, strictly prevent cross-border crime and maintain the hard-won peace so that cooperation would bring greater benefits to the people of both countries.
The two leaders reached several understandings on future cooperation, including stronger youth exchanges, human-resource development and exchanges of experience in party and state governance. They explicitly set the goal of US$20 billion in bilateral trade and expressed optimism about achieving it within the next two to three years, recognising substantial remaining cooperation potential in economic, trade and other fields.
