Summary

Ahead of festivities on February 16–19, the ministry highlighted care for children and older people and warned against food and alcohol of unknown origin.

With Chinese and Vietnamese New Year approaching on February 16–19, the Health Ministry urged people to protect their own and their families’ health, especially young children and older people. It advised handwashing, proper kitchen hygiene and food storage, and avoiding food or alcohol of unknown origin or past its expiry date.

In a February 13 press release, the ministry warned against consuming alcohol of unknown production origin or mixing methanol with rice spirits, which could cause poisoning and death. People should use clean water and good-quality ingredients, avoid adding chemicals to food, and not use expired or spoiled food.

The ministry also urged people to avoid excessive drinking, which can contribute to violence and road crashes, travel carefully, follow traffic law and take precautions against fires at home. Anyone with fever, cough, breathing difficulty, other health problems or suspected infection should promptly seek care at a health centre or referral hospital.
