Summary

Fisheries and WWF researchers spotted an approximately two-day-old calf at Kampi in Kratie on March 5 and said it appeared healthy.

Researchers from the Kratie Fisheries Administration cantonment and WWF’s Kratie team spotted a newborn dolphin at Antong Vien pool in the Kampi dolphin area, Kampi village, Sambok commune, Chetr Borei district, Kratie province. The sighting took place at 9:50 a.m. on March 5, 2026, when the calf was estimated to be two days old.

According to the researchers, the calf was healthy and was with a group of seven dolphins, including adult dolphin number 81.

This was the second newborn calf recorded in 2026. The first had been observed and photographed in mid-February 2026.

The sighting at Kampi came only days before a planned meeting of the Commission for the Conservation and Development of the Mekong River Dolphin Tourism Area on March 9, 2026.

The meeting, planned for Kratie town, was intended to provide a forum for stakeholders to review past work, consult and draw up future plans for effective dolphin management, protection and conservation. The report describes the dolphins as Cambodia’s natural treasures and the “breath of the Mekong.” By Pai Sokhim
