Summary

At the Foreign Ministry’s March 5 annual review meeting, Prak Sokhonn called for initiative and foresight to safeguard Cambodia’s interests amid external pressures.

On March 5, Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation Prak Sokhonn told the ministry’s annual review meeting that the international landscape was changing profoundly. He said intensifying major-power rivalry was constraining the policy space of small and medium-sized states. In this context, Cambodian diplomats needed a stronger sense of mission and sound judgement to safeguard national sovereignty and the people’s interests.

Prak Sokhonn said Cambodia continued to face pressure from some external powers and neighbouring countries, including territorial issues, encroachments and attacks on its reputation. He criticised attempts by certain countries to exert pressure through military and economic advantages. Diplomats, he said, were the first line of defence for national interests and must firmly uphold territorial integrity and national dignity.

In response to the complex and changing international situation, Prak Sokhonn called for an approach that took unconventional paths and seized the initiative. He urged diplomats to move beyond traditional thinking, improve foresight and actively seek opportunities and tasks, using flexible, pragmatic strategies to protect Cambodia’s interests in a turbulent international environment.
