Summary

Cambodia’s defence spokesperson described alleged Thai attacks and cited cultural authorities’ damage records; the claims remain attributed to Cambodia.

A delegation of military attachés accredited to Cambodia from 12 countries visited Preah Vihear Temple and its surrounding area in Choam Khsant district, Preah Vihear province, on March 5 to examine conditions on the ground.

That evening, Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata said Cambodia alleged that Thai forces had attacked the temple twice using heavy weapons, including aerial bombardments by drones and fighter jets, severely damaging the World Heritage Site and surrounding areas. Cambodia said this harmed the monument’s structure and showed disrespect for culture, civilisation and humanity’s shared heritage.

According to damage records cited from Cambodia’s Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts, destruction assessed from December 7 to 27, 2025 was worse than that recorded in July 2025. The Preah Vihear National Authority said photographic and video documentation collected on December 28 confirmed severe damage at 562 locations within the temple.
