After a fire at an allegedly illegal scrap-waste storage site, authorities reported finding serious environmental pollution. Environment Minister Eang Sophalleth instructed all capital and provincial environment departments to inspect and report on scrap-storage sites nationwide to ensure compliance with environmental rules.
The Environment Ministry said the instruction followed a fire at an illegal scrap-waste storage site in Kampong Speu province that produced thick black smoke and raised concerns about environmental and public-health impacts.
Under the instruction, departments must inspect and report on scrap-storage and processing sites within their jurisdictions. Checks will focus on environmental standards, including proper waste storage, hazardous-waste management and valid environmental permits.
Ministry officials said the checks aim to prevent environmental risks, such as fires, air pollution and improper handling of hazardous substances, that may arise at poorly managed waste-storage sites.
The ministry warned that businesses failing to comply with environmental laws and rules could face administrative measures or legal action under Cambodia’s Environment and Natural Resources Code.
Authorities said the nationwide checks aim to strengthen environmental monitoring and ensure waste-management activities do not endanger the environment or public health.
