Summary

Sun Chanthol met a Japan–Cambodia Association delegation on April 1 to discuss business cooperation, port expansion, aquaculture, cashews and future investment-promotion plans.

On the afternoon of April 1, 2026, Deputy Prime Minister Sun Chanthol, first vice chairman of the Council for the Development of Cambodia (CDC), met a Japan–Cambodia Association delegation led by Takahashi Fumiaki to strengthen economic cooperation and promote investment between the two countries.

The two sides discussed cooperation in detail, particularly through the Business Co-Creation Team mechanism, which was described as playing an important role in connecting business opportunities and promoting joint Cambodian–Japanese investment.

Sun Chanthol also outlined progress on the Sihanoukville deep-water port expansion project, supported by financing from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). He said it was expected to become an important economic gateway that would improve Cambodia’s regional competitiveness.

The Japanese side reported progress on its tilapia-farming investment, which was supplying the domestic market, including supermarkets and major restaurants. It was examining the feasibility of expanding production for export. In response, Cambodia encouraged further investment in shrimp farming and other aquatic species with strong potential.

The Japanese side also reaffirmed continued investment in cashews, an important strategic Cambodian product for which demand in Japan was continuing to grow.

To attract further investment, Sun Chanthol outlined plans for an investment-promotion mission to Japan and a Business Breakfast programme to provide a forum for direct dialogue with investors and address their difficulties.

In conclusion, the Japanese side expressed confidence in Cambodia’s investment environment and pledged to continue encouraging more Japanese investors to invest in the country. The CDC reaffirmed its full coordination and support to turn investment opportunities into tangible economic results for both countries. Written by KPS99TV
