Two road crashes in Kampong Chhnang and Svay Rieng provinces on the morning of May 23, 2026 killed 13 factory workers and injured many others, according to the initial information cited in this article. The labour ministry expressed shock and urged respect for traffic laws. The figures below are preliminary figures, rather than final figures following later updates.
In the initial account, Ministry of Labour and Vocational Training spokesman Sun Mesa said the first crash occurred on National Road 5 in Kampong Tralach district, Kampong Chhnang province, involving a heavy goods vehicle and a worker-transport vehicle. Eight workers died and 10 were seriously injured, while others suffered minor injuries. The second crash, in Svay Rieng city, Svay Rieng province, killed five workers, seriously injured five and left 16 with minor injuries.
Sun Mesa said the National Social Security Fund (NSSF), labour departments and nearby authorities immediately worked to rescue the injured and arrange treatment at nearby hospitals, with onward transfers to provincial hospitals and Calmette Hospital. He urged strict compliance with traffic laws to prevent further tragedies involving workers.
He also said ministry leaders would help organise the victims’ funerals and cover funeral expenses. Those affected would receive benefits in accordance with NSSF law, he added.
