Malaysian Media Warn of Cross-Border Kidnapping and Online-Scam Risks via Thailand

Summary

An article in Malaysia’s The Vibes warns about trafficking and online-scam recruitment risks involving travel through Thailand, citing a Chinese embassy safety advisory and the 2025 Wang Xing case.

In an article published by Malaysia’s The Vibes on October 21, 2026, Murray Hunter wrote that Thailand was becoming an important transit point for kidnapping, human trafficking and online-scam operations in Southeast Asia.

The report cited a safety advisory from the Chinese Embassy in Thailand urging Chinese citizens to plan their trips carefully, use legitimate transport providers, avoid accepting free transfers offered by strangers or acquaintances, and refrain from making unplanned changes to their itineraries. Arrangements involving travel to the Thailand–Myanmar border require particular caution.

Online streamers, entertainers and actors were urged to be especially vigilant. Criminal groups may use offers of well-paid work, performances, investment projects or film shoots to lure victims to Thailand before transferring them to Myanmar’s border areas.

The report said Chinese citizens had been a major target, but criminal groups were increasingly targeting people from other countries. Some victims arriving in Bangkok or other major Thai cities may be unlawfully detained, assaulted or forcibly transferred and ultimately trafficked to scam compounds near the Thailand–Myanmar border.

Inside the compounds, victims may have their passports confiscated and be forced through threats, violence and intimidation to take part in online fraud. The schemes include relationship-based investment scams, bogus investments, business and charity fraud, and intimidation by people impersonating law-enforcement officers. The report said such cross-border crime generated billions of dollars in illicit proceeds each year and had become a major regional security concern.

The report also recalled the 2025 case of Chinese actor Wang Xing, who travelled to Thailand for what he believed was filming work, disappeared and was taken to Myanmar before being rescued. The case attracted widespread attention and prompted further discussion about the safety of travel to Thailand, influencing some travellers’ decisions.
