Summary

Cambodia received a feasibility study for modernising and expanding its National Museum on October 22, 2026. The study, undertaken with France, had a budget of €900,000.

On October 22, 2026, Phoeurng Sackona, Cambodia’s Minister of Culture and Fine Arts, attended the official handover of the results of a feasibility study for the improvement, modernisation and expansion of the National Museum of Cambodia. The ceremony at the museum was presided over by Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers, and French Ambassador to Cambodia Olivier Richard.

The minister described the project as a demonstration of the depth of Cambodia–France friendship and cultural cooperation, built on a long history and a shared commitment to preserving and promoting cultural heritage.

According to the report, the project began taking shape following guidance and a long-term vision from Samdech Techo Hun Sen towards the end of the sixth government mandate, and high-level meetings between Cambodia’s head of state and head of government and the French President. It subsequently received support and approval in principle from Prime Minister Hun Manet, as well as support from Permanent Deputy Prime Minister Vongsey Vissoth, Minister in Charge of the Office of the Council of Ministers. The feasibility study for the museum’s improvement, modernisation and expansion was carried out through direct cooperation between the Ministry of Culture and Fine Arts and the French Embassy in Phnom Penh, with a budget of €900,000.

The vision is to explore ways to improve the National Museum while preserving its historical value, strengthening its capacity to conserve and display Cambodia’s cultural treasures, and meeting future needs. By: ស្រីពី
