Summary

Following consular intervention on January 3, a Chinese woman was transferred to Tongji Hospital in Sihanoukville. The hospital reports improvement, and her family has been contacted about returning her home.

Recent media reports said a Chinese woman was stranded on the streets of Sihanoukville, Cambodia. On the afternoon of January 3, the Chinese Embassy’s consular office in Sihanoukville intervened to investigate. Through its coordination, the woman, identified by the partially withheld name Wu, was transferred from a local hospital to the Chinese-funded Tongji Hospital in Sihanoukville, which offered better conditions, for rehabilitation treatment.

Hospital staff said a comprehensive examination found inflammation and infections in several parts of her body and severe malnutrition. The hospital said that, following active treatment after admission, her symptoms had improved, she was clear-minded and emotionally stable, her appetite and food intake were steadily increasing, and her physical condition had improved markedly. The hospital would continue consolidation treatment using appropriate medical care to help her recover as soon as possible.

According to Wu’s account, she came to Cambodia after being attracted by promises of “high-paying work” and later ended up on the streets. Her health has now improved somewhat, and the consular office has contacted her family to come to Cambodia and arrange her return home.

The Chinese Embassy again reminded Chinese citizens not to believe overseas “high-paying recruitment” claims unquestioningly and to beware of scam traps that could endanger their safety. Anyone facing online scams, unlawful detention or similar situations should immediately report to Cambodian and Chinese police and contact the embassy for assistance.
