Myanmar’s government recently announced a nationwide amnesty marking the 78th anniversary of independence from British colonial rule, under which 6,186 detainees will be released. They include 52 foreigners who will be deported after their release. Officials have not yet published a list of those concerned.
In addition to releasing some detainees outright, the military administration also introduced sentence reductions, cutting the sentences of some serving prisoners nationwide by one-sixth. The policy does not change the nature of the cases and is a holiday-related judicial arrangement.
