Summary

The February 9 observance at the Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Centre included recitation and a ceremony honouring the Tripitaka Council.

The Cambodian government has promoted Buddhist practice, receiving strong approval from the heads of both Buddhist monastic orders and Buddhist followers across the country, the report said.

On February 9, 2026, Dr Pech Chanmony Hun Manet joined a Tripitaka procession celebrating the 56th anniversary of the complete Khmer translation. The observance, including recitation and homage to the Tripitaka Council, took place at the Kingdom of Cambodia’s Vipassana Dhura Buddhist Centre at Preah Reach Troap Mountain–Oudong.

The ceremony aimed to celebrate the historic achievement of fully translating the Tripitaka from Pali into Khmer; honour the council’s work compiling, translating and preserving this valuable Buddhist heritage; and recite the Tripitaka to uphold the value of the Dharma and spread Buddhist knowledge more widely.

Under Cambodia’s Constitution, Buddhism is the state religion. The report described three government decisions honouring Khmer Buddhism: re-establishing the Tripitaka Council to verify Buddhist scriptures and translate the Atthakatha, Tika and Yojana commentarial works, described as explanations by arahants of the Buddha’s words in the Tripitaka; organising Khmer Tripitaka recitation every five years at Angkor Wat or Preah Reach Troap Mountain, where the Buddha’s relics are enshrined; and holding commemorations of the translation and ceremonies honouring the council.
