Summary

Huot Hak met Cuba’s tourism vice-minister and ambassador on February 10 to discuss tourism potential, a proposed agreement and air connections via Istanbul.

On February 10, 2026, Tourism Minister Huot Hak received Cuban Tourism Vice-Minister Adalberto Venero Lemus, accompanied by Cuba’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Cambodia, Milena Caridad Zaldivar Piedra, and colleagues, for a courtesy call and working discussions on strengthening bilateral tourism cooperation.

Huot Hak highlighted the countries’ longstanding diplomatic ties and close friendship, established in 1960 and spanning 66 years by 2026. Their senior leaders had continually strengthened and expanded relations, providing an important foundation for cooperation across sectors, particularly tourism, in which both countries had substantial resources, cultural potential and warm hospitality.

The Cuban vice-minister expressed strong interest in Cambodia’s socioeconomic development during the preceding two days of his working visit. He thanked Cambodia’s Tourism Ministry for arranging meetings with Cambodian tourism associations to promote Cuba’s tourism potential.

He said the visit’s main purposes included proposing a tourism-cooperation memorandum of understanding between the two ministries, planned for a forthcoming international tourism fair in Cuba, and arranging reciprocal familiarisation trips, or FAM Trips, to promote tourist exchanges, diversify tourism markets and support both economies.

The report also highlighted Turkish Airlines connections linking Phnom Penh and Havana via Istanbul, Türkiye, as making travel between Cambodia and Cuba easier and helping tourism growth and people-to-people relations.
