Summary

At a February 17 meeting with Lao deputy defence minister and military chief of staff Saichay Kommasith, Hun Sen called for deeper training, security and disaster-management cooperation.

On the morning of February 17, Cambodian Senate President Hun Sen met Lieutenant General Saichay Kommasith, Lao deputy minister of national defence and chief of the Lao People’s Army General Staff, at the Senate’s Solidarity Palace. They discussed deepening cooperation between the two armed forces.

Senate spokesperson Chea Thyrith said afterwards that the Lao deputy minister had praised current bilateral relations, particularly defence and military ties, and pledged further efforts to strengthen them.

The Lao official described their shared frontier as a border of peace, cooperation and security, supported by collaboration between the armed forces and authorities of both countries.

Hun Sen also encouraged the defence sectors and armed forces to expand exchanges of training experience and increase defence scholarships to develop human capital in both countries.

He welcomed past border cooperation and urged the authorities and armed forces to work together further to better preserve peace and security along the frontier.

Hun Sen suggested border cooperation within the expansion of friendly relations, including action against cross-border crime. He also wanted cooperation on managing border disasters such as floods and forest fires, making Cambodia–Laos border cooperation broader and deeper.
