Summary

Vietnam has licensed Starlink to provide satellite internet, initially allowing four gateway stations and up to 600,000 terminals, subject to protection of existing radio networks.

Vietnamese government agencies recently said Starlink had received an operating licence to provide satellite internet services in Vietnam. Under the licence, its local subsidiary may initially deploy four gateway stations and up to 600,000 terminals.

The licence also explicitly requires the company not to interfere with existing radio communication networks during operations. The move is seen as an important step in upgrading Vietnam’s communication infrastructure and introducing high-capacity satellite broadband.

Founded by Elon Musk, Starlink uses thousands of low-Earth-orbit satellites to provide high-speed internet access to remote areas around the world.

Data show that nearly 80% of Vietnam’s roughly 100 million people use the internet, but rural and mountainous areas still face gaps in coverage and connection quality. Analysts believe Starlink’s entry could help address these gaps in remote areas and improve nationwide digital connectivity.
