Summary

In a Washington interview with Reuters, Hun Manet alleged that Thai forces remained inside Cambodian territory after the ceasefire and blocked civilians from returning home, urging renewed boundary work.

United States: Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet told Reuters about what he described as Thai military incursions into Cambodia’s sovereign territory after the ceasefire, despite a peace agreement brokered by US President Donald Trump and ASEAN.

In the interview in Washington, the Cambodian prime minister alleged that Thai troops currently occupied areas deep inside parts of Cambodia’s sovereign territory and had placed shipping containers and barbed wire to prevent Cambodian civilians from returning to their homes.

He said: “The only way to verify this is to use the technical mechanisms that Cambodia and Thailand have jointly signed, meaning on the basis of all the treaties and agreements the two countries have.”

The prime minister hoped Thailand would return to Joint Boundary Commission (JBC) meetings and work as soon as possible. With the election now over, he hoped Thailand could at least begin at the technical level, starting surveys and placing boundary markers in sensitive areas to restore the border to its original state.
