Summary

The ministry denied a reported February 24 grenade incident and described communications between Cambodian and Thai military liaison teams.

On February 24, Cambodian Defence Ministry spokesperson Maly Socheata denied claims that Cambodian troops had fired into Thailand, calling reports on some Thai military platforms and media entirely untrue. The reports alleged that Cambodian forces fired a 40 mm grenade towards a Thai patrol position in the Preah Vihear border area at 8:50 a.m. The ministry rejected the allegation, saying it could mislead the public and increase tensions.

The Royal Cambodian Armed Forces 4th Military Region said Cambodian personnel had heard explosions and gunfire from the Thai side during the relevant period. Its liaison team promptly contacted Thailand’s 2nd Army Area and clearly stated that Cambodian forces had not carried out any firing and that the media claims were incorrect.

The ministry reaffirmed that it would strictly implement existing bilateral understandings and agreements, ease tensions through dialogue and cooperation and maintain lasting border peace. It urged the public and media not to spread unverified information and to rely on official releases.
