Preah Sihanouk Governor Mang Sineth told a delegation from the Senate’s Seventh Commission that the province’s security management had improved considerably, according to Interior Ministry assessments comparing it with other provinces and the capital. Yet, he said, people abroad, especially in China and other countries, thought first of Preah Sihanouk when online scams were mentioned, rather than neighbouring countries.
He made the comments during a February 25 working meeting between the provincial administration and the Seventh Commission delegation, led by its chairman Chhit Sokhon.
The governor said foreign perceptions of security problems linked to online scams persisted despite improvements. He said authorities had inspected and taken action at 86 casino locations linked to online scams, with fewer than ten locations remaining on which further clarification would be given soon.
Mang Sineth explained that the provincial administration previously could not enter licensed casinos because they fell under a commercial gambling management commission chaired by the economic authorities, and the province was not a member. He said the government authorised provincial inspections and procedures after the online-scam crackdown began.
