Summary

The report places viewing on March 21–23 in the early morning and describes the link between Khmer architecture, astronomy and belief.

The event known as Equinox Angkor, when the sun rises directly over Angkor Wat’s central tower, illustrates Khmer ancestors’ consideration of architectural design, temple construction, land planning, mathematical calculation and celestial movements, combined with belief, in creating the alignment.

The report says the event occurs twice each year. The first, called the dry-season or Vernal Equinox, was expected between March 21 and 23, from 5 a.m. to 6:30 a.m. The second, called the rainy-season or Autumnal Equinox, could occur between September 21 and 23.

The popular event attracts domestic and international visitors from many places to gather in front of Angkor Wat’s western entrance to watch and photograph the striking sunrise.
