Summary

At the March 11 opening, Agriculture Ministry Secretary of State Khun Savoeun discussed Australian support and expected benefits for fisheries and food security.

On March 11, 2026, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries Ministry Secretary of State Khun Savoeun led specialist officials, an Australian technical team and provincial authorities at the opening of a fishway at Ta Ouan dam on the Prek Tnot River in Kampong Speu, where he delivered remarks.

The new fishway is expected to help increase local fish production over time, benefit the environment and support residents’ livelihoods.

The secretary of state said the Australian Government-funded facility was a new achievement for Kampong Speu. It was designed to help more than 100 fish species move during the spawning season and contribute to conserving and replenishing fish populations.

He said the ministry, Cambodian fisheries scientists and irrigation engineers were working with development partners, especially Australia, to promote fish-passage technology in the Mekong region. The work aims to protect fish populations and support food security and nutrition for rural communities in Cambodia.

Khun Savoeun called for an end to fishing with prohibited illegal gear and urged collective conservation of fisheries resources to sustain fish populations in the future. Written by Pai Sokhim.
