In a recent interview with Bloomberg, Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet said the government would continue its targeted crackdown on telecommunications and online scams, taking action under the law against individuals and organisations suspected of participating in, shielding or tolerating such crimes.
Hun Manet said the crackdown targeted unlawful and criminal conduct rather than particular groups. Regardless of a person’s identity, position or social status, anyone suspected of criminal conduct and implicated by relevant evidence would be investigated under the law.
He said the government had already held some military, police and local officials accountable under the law for suspected involvement in or protection of scam operations, or for failing to carry out their enforcement duties effectively. This included changes to the positions of some three-star, two-star and one-star generals, as well as action against some provincial officials and police chiefs.
Hun Manet stressed that combating online scams was one of the government’s current priorities. Operations would proceed in accordance with the law, investigate everyone implicated and continue dismantling networks engaged in telecommunications and online fraud.
