A passenger ferry and a sand carrier recently collided in waters under Phnom Penh’s jurisdiction in Cambodia. The accident caused no casualties.
According to the account, the collision happened on the afternoon of July 26, when a passenger ferry travelling through navigable waters struck a sand carrier at work, creating a water transport safety hazard. Checks at the scene found no injuries or deaths, and no major property damage, water pollution or other secondary incidents.
On the morning of July 27, Ministry of Public Works and Transport spokesperson 潘林 issued a statement on his official Facebook page expressing regret over the collision. Based on inspections at the scene and preliminary investigative evidence, the authorities identified a technical equipment fault on the passenger ferry as the direct cause. The fault affected the ferry’s operation and led to the collision.
The statement said that, although there were no casualties, the ferry operator, as the party responsible for operational safety, must bear responsibility for the accident. The competent authorities required the company to issue a public apology, thoroughly review what went wrong, devise and implement targeted corrective measures, and improve vessel navigation safety controls to prevent similar accidents.
