Samdech Thipadei: Cambodia Continues to Use Legal and Technical Bases in Resolving Border Issues with Thailand

Samdech Thipadei Hun Manet, even while carrying out his mission in Azerbaijan, continues to follow most closely the proceedings of the UNCLOS meeting in the Netherlands, with the meeting set to continue on October 18.

On October 16, 2026, Samdech noted on social media that negotiating border issues between countries is a great responsibility of the Royal Government toward the nation and people, requiring a clear basis in records, laws, and border technicalities. This work must be carried out with thoroughness and great patience to safeguard national sovereignty. Therefore, resolving border issues cannot be based on information without a clear source, such as news from television, social media, rumors, or conclusions drawn without evidence.

As for the resolution mechanism, Cambodia must choose methods appropriate to the circumstances and actual situation. For land border issues, Cambodia is pushing for resolution through the bilateral mechanism, namely the Joint Commission on Demarcation of the Land Border (JBC). As for maritime border issues, Cambodia is using the compulsory dispute settlement mechanism under the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) to seek solutions in accordance with international law.

At the same time, Cambodia has sent a delegation and legal team, led by His Excellency Deputy Prime Minister Prak Sokhonn, as Cambodia's agent, to participate in the second meeting of the UNCLOS Commission of Conciliation with Thailand, in The Hague, the Netherlands, from October 14 to October 18, 2026. This meeting is held at the Peace Palace and the headquarters of the Permanent Court of Arbitration (PCA) and the International Court of Justice (ICJ). This participation demonstrates the continued use of legal and diplomatic mechanisms to seek peaceful solutions to border issues and safeguard national sovereignty. Article by: Sophork
