In another controversial political message that drew intense global attention, U.S. President Donald Trump called for New Mexico to be officially renamed New America. The proposal marks the latest step in his efforts to rename geographical areas in pursuit of his strategy and nationalist politics.
Trump posted on Truth Social yesterday, Monday, that New Mexico should immediately be renamed New America because the territory belongs to the United States, not Mexico.
Monday’s statement was not the first time Trump had raised the idea of renaming New Mexico. In September, he shared an image on social media showing a map of the state with “Mexico” crossed out and “America” written underneath.
In addition, in August, Trump signed an executive order calling for Lake Ontario to be renamed Lake America amid continuing trade tensions with Canada.
