Indonesia began reducing natural gas exports to Singapore on October 24, 2026. The move comes as President Prabowo Subianto’s government gives priority to domestic energy needs amid growing concerns about national energy security.
The cuts directly affect pipeline gas supplied from Natuna and Sumatra. They follow remarks by Indonesia’s Minister of Energy and Mineral Resources, Bahlil Lahadalia, about the possibility of suspending or ending gas exports to neighbouring countries.
The report, citing the US Energy Information Administration, puts the reduction at 31 BBTUD, equivalent to about 8% of the volume of gas Indonesia exported to Singapore by pipeline in 2024. The reported total for that year was approximately 4.11 billion cubic metres.
Indonesia has planned to reduce gas exports to Singapore for several years to meet rapidly growing domestic demand. In 2022, the Indonesian government agreed to extend the gas supply contract with Singapore until 2028, but at a lower volume than under the previous contract. In April 2025, Indonesia had planned to reduce supplies from Sumatra while drawing on Natuna supplies to mitigate the impact on Singapore. The 2026 cuts affect supplies from both areas.
