At about 2 p.m. on December 21, Poipet’s outskirts came under artillery attack again. The attack was carried out by Thai troops, with some shells landing near Road 58. Although the city centre was not hit in this attack, the loud explosions caused panic among nearby residents.

Local residents recorded the attack on video: some stood on rooftops and others lay on balconies, stopping to observe what was happening. To gain a sense of security, some Chinese residents in Poipet displayed China’s five-star red flag in various places. Some climbed onto roofs to hang flags, while others planted them in the middle of roads in hopes of protecting themselves.

The attack followed Thailand’s use of F-16 aircraft to bomb a warehouse in Poipet on December 18, showing that the situation in the border area remained tense.
