Cambodia expressed support for the General Border Committee (GBC) meeting tomorrow, December 24, hoping an immediate ceasefire would bring peace to both countries.
In a letter dated December 22 to Thai Defence Minister Nattaphon Narkphanit, Thailand’s GBC co-chair, Cambodian Defence Minister General Tea Seiha reaffirmed: “Cambodia is committed to dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes in accordance with international law.”
The Cambodian defence minister’s letter to his Thai counterpart outlined several key agenda proposals, including an immediate end to all hostilities and full respect for and implementation of the July 28 ceasefire agreement, the October 26 Kuala Lumpur Joint Declaration and other agreements reached under the same framework.
Other priority agenda items included the unhindered, safe and dignified return home of civilians from affected border areas, as well as reactivating border demarcation and humanitarian mine clearance measures.
It should be noted that Malaysia, the rotating ASEAN chair, held a special ASEAN foreign ministers’ meeting yesterday on the current Cambodia–Thailand situation, at which the Cambodian and Thai sides agreed to hold a GBC meeting tomorrow.
