On January 8, Division 3 of Thailand’s Immigration Bureau arrested a 49-year-old Chinese man surnamed Zhu, wanted by Chinese police, at a hotel in Bangkok’s Huai Khwang district. The operation was led by the head of the immigration investigation unit. During routine checks of places where foreigners stay, officers noticed his unusual behaviour and a close match between his appearance and China’s wanted notice, then placed him under surveillance.
To ensure the operation succeeded, officers disguised themselves as food-delivery workers and watched the hotel perimeter. After identifying the target, they approached to check his identity. Checks of his passport and other information confirmed that he was the wanted Chinese national whom Thailand had listed as prohibited from entering, and officers arrested him on the spot in accordance with the law.
According to the investigation described in the report, Zhu is suspected of major fraud in China in 2023. He had worked at a securities and investment management company and allegedly used his position to register shares illegally through a nominee-shareholding arrangement before its stock-market listing. He then allegedly used this to pressure senior executives and extort about RMB22 million, approximately THB100 million, before fleeing abroad. Thai immigration authorities are now handling the case through the prescribed procedures and will initiate judicial cooperation with China to discuss a subsequent handover.
