Summary

Cambodia’s Interior Ministry said on January 8 that Thai drones made 27 incursions overnight. Cambodia said it had banned drone flights in border provinces and authorised military counter-drone systems when necessary.

In a notice issued on the evening of January 8, Cambodia’s Ministry of Interior said Thailand had repeatedly sent drones into Cambodia’s sovereign airspace from the evening of January 7 to the early morning of January 8, totalling 27 sorties: 25 over Preah Vihear province and two over Pursat province. Cambodia said these activities had affected border security.

This was not the first reported crossing by Thai drones. On the evening of January 5, Thailand sent reconnaissance drones into Pursat province, with one approaching the Cham Yeam international border checkpoint in Koh Kong province. On the evening of January 6, Thailand again flew several drones, including flights taking off near the entrance to National Road 56 and flying over the Thma Da area of Veal Veng district, Pursat province, according to the report.

The relevant departments are coordinating closely with the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces, continuing to monitor border security and taking necessary lawful measures to safeguard national sovereignty and territorial integrity. Cambodia also reiterated that both sides had previously pledged at a special meeting of the joint border committee to avoid actions that would heighten tensions. In light of recent developments, Cambodia has completely banned drone flights in border provinces and authorised the military to activate counter-drone systems when necessary to respond lawfully.
