Summary

After the March 18 evening crash, the vehicle’s occupants said a woman drove, while residents alleged a man was driving. Police said they were investigating and questioning both occupants; the boy’s relatives called for justice.

Phnom Penh police said they were continuing to investigate a car crash that seriously injured a boy, to identify the actual driver and establish responsibility. The report also refers to an allegation that someone on the vehicle’s side said, “If he dies, pay US$20,000.” The occupants told police that the driver was a woman rather than a man.

Police said the crash occurred on the evening of March 18 in Kilometre 6 Sangkat, Russey Keo district. A man and a woman who were in the vehicle were being taken for questioning by road traffic investigators under legal procedures.

The vehicle’s occupants said the woman drove after she and the man left a place serving food and alcohol in Sen Sok district. Police said technical investigations would continue to establish driving responsibility fairly before the file was sent to court for examination and decision.

The boy’s relatives asked the justice and interior ministers to help secure justice. Residents at the scene alleged that a drunken man drove and identified him as the son of the Kang Meas district governor in Kampong Cham. Relatives said they feared intervention by powerful connections. Those identity, intoxication and interference claims remain allegations by the people concerned.
