Thai police carried out a joint operation at an upmarket Bangkok condominium, detaining a 37-year-old Chinese man surnamed Sun on suspicion of telecommunications fraud. Police said he was wanted by the Chachoengsao court for alleged joint public fraud and offences under the Computer Crime Act.
Acting on earlier leads, officers raided the apartment in Huai Khwang district and detained the suspect. They seized several phones, computers and communications devices, as well as more than five million baht in cash, reported as approximately US$145,000. Police initially linked the case to cross-border call-centre fraud.
Police said some scam groups had increasingly used high-end Bangkok apartments for remote operations. The source of the funds and other alleged group members remain under investigation. Police said they would continue the crackdown and urged the public to remain alert to telecommunications fraud.
